Update October 16, 2003

Greetings in Christ!

This month we continued to gain insight into the needs of the missionaries we are ministering to.  On September 29, Anne arrived in Tegucigalpa, Honduras, to visit Gloria Del Cid, our affiliate there.

Gloria is doing Christian counseling in five high schools in the city.  Because of the positive changes administrators have seen in students’ lives due to her influence, she is welcomed and even provided with an office at each school.  I was able to visit three of the schools with Gloria and at each one she was greeted warmly and sought out by students and teachers alike.

At one school, the guidance counselor told Gloria that she needed to talk to Luis, who had been asking to see her.  Gloria went and got him out of class and they sat down in the outdoor stadium to talk.  At one point I saw them bow their heads in prayer.  After a long conversation, Luis went back to class and Gloria told me his story.

Luis had been a high-level gang member in one of the two most prominent gangs in Tegucigalpa.  He had brutally killed many people.  Earlier this year he had his gang tattoos removed and left the gang, in spite of their attempts to take his life.  In August he heard a short-term New Missions Systems team share the gospel at his school.  He told Gloria the day I was there that he wanted to become a true Christian.  That day he prayed and trusted Christ as his Savior.

Gloria also heads up weekend sports clubs for at-risk kids.  The activities always include a short devotional.  She is hoping to expand the program to include vacation and after school clubs.

It didn’t take long to understand why there is such a need for Gloria’s ministry in Honduras.  Gloria told me that only 6% of children are raised in two parent homes; 70% are raised by single parents—usually mothers; the rest are raised by grandparents—usually grandmothers.  Incest and child sexual abuse are rampant.  Gloria’s own Honduran family (she was raised by an American couple in the States from age 10) has been touched by single parenthood, incest and child abuse.

So what is my role in all of this?  Gloria has needs and problems, too.  I went to listen, encourage, ask questions, and give guidance.  By the end of my five-day visit, it was clear that the Lord had used me to help her in several significant areas.  Our prayer is that as we care for these New Mission Systems missionaries on the field, they will be refreshed, more effective, and better prepared for long term ministry.

Thank you so much for making it possible for us to do this.  Together we are having a worldwide impact.

                                                            With love and appreciation,

                                                             Bob and Anne Krepps
